Utbrudd av marburgvirus i Rwanda

Rwandas helsemyndigheter og Verdens helseorganisasjon (WHO) har meldt om et utbrudd av marburgsykdom i Rwanda. Det er rapportert om tilfeller i syv (av 30) distrikter i landet, blant annet nær grensene til Uganda, Tanzania og DR Kongo. Det er derfor en viss risiko for spredning over landegrensene.
29. september var 26 personer bekreftet syke, inkludert åtte dødsfall. 70% av de syke er helsearbeidere i hovedstaden Kigali. Helsemyndighetene i Rwanda følger opp nye tilfeller med isolasjon, smittesporing og andre tiltak for å motvirke videre smittespredning. Så langt er det identifisert 161 nærkontakter. WHO støtter og bistår i arbeidet som pågår.
Marburgvirus er beslektet med ebolavirus, det smitter på samme måte (ved kontakt med kroppsvæsker fra syke personer eller dyr) og gir et lignende sykdomsbilde. Det finnes ikke vaksine mot marburgvirus.
Det er ikke grunnlag for å fraråde reiser til Rwanda, men man bør ta forhåndsregler som å:
- Sørge for god håndhygiene.
- Unngå kontakt med syke og døde personer
- Tilstrebe minst mulig direkte hudkontakt med andre mennesker.
- Unngå nær kontakt med levende og døde ville dyr (inkludert aper, antiloper, gnagere og flaggermus). Hindre at gnagere får tilgang til matvarer som da kan kontamineres med spytt, ekskrementer eller urin.
- Ikke oppsøk huler og andre typiske tilholdssted for flaggermus.
- Ikke spis såkalt «bushmeat», det vil si kjøtt fra ville dyr.
