Researchers at the Global Health Cluster are part of two newly funded projects under the EDCTP3 program, supported by the European Union. These projects, based in Sub-Saharan Africa, focus on capacity building in health informatics, strengthening health information systems, and implementing digital registries—particularly in the fields of maternal and child health and infectious diseases.
These initiatives complement the ongoing Building Stronger Institutions (BIS) Program in Uganda and Ethiopia, further enhancing regional healthcare infrastructure and research capacity.
BRIDGE Network: Building Infectious Disease Expertise in SSA
An African European consortium spanning 6 Sub-Saharan African and 3 European countries is pioneering the BRIDGE Program—a scalable training network aimed at producing empowered infectious disease experts. The program establishes 5 Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in Benin, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa, serving as hubs for training, research, and infectious disease data harmonisation.
Over 54 months, BRIDGE will train at least 120 certified experts, 10 PhDs, and 4 postdocs, ensuring sustainable leadership in infectious disease research across SSA.
NIPH will co-lead the work on data harmonisation and use, ethics of data sharing and dissemination.
- Start date: 1 October 2024, end date: 31 March 2029
- Coordinator: University of Ghent, Belgium
LINDA-FAMILIA: Scaling Up Digital Health Systems
The LINDA-FAMILIA project aims to enhance maternal and child healthcare by adapting and expanding digital registries (eRegistries) in Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. Using DHIS2, the world’s largest open-source health information management platform, the project will capture critical pregnancy, neonatal, and pediatric data to improve disease surveillance and healthcare services. It focuses on implementing eRegistries for real-time patient data management, integrating digital tools to support clinical decision-making and referrals, enhancing communication between healthcare providers and patients, and strengthening capacity through training and research.
LINDA-FAMILIA aims to empower local health systems, ensuring better health outcomes for mothers and children across East Africa.
NIPH will lead the work on implementation science of digital registries (eRegistries) and randomised controlled trials of the interventions.
